Smashburger

Beehive Burger and Smash Fries

Smashburger isn’t local to Salt Lake City like Crown Burger is – it’s actually a national chain. But it just so happens to be a national chain with no location in Pennsylvania and no location in Northeast Ohio (there are some location in the Columbus and Dayton areas). Because of this, I’d never heard of Smashburger until I moved here.

Luckily for us, there is a Smashburger right down the street, just past In-N-Out and Astro Burgers (I still need to check out Astro).

Smashburger is fairly new chain – it was founded in 2007 in Denver. The place considers itself a “fast casual” restaurant, so it’s a bit pricier and takes a bit more time then a fast food burger joint, but the food is also of a higher quality.

The menu consists of standard burgers, chicken sandwiches, hot dogs, and sides – and each location also has one regional specialty burger. For example, Ohio the “Buckeye Burger”, New York has the “New Yorker, and Kuwait (?) obviously has the “Kuwait Burger”. Here in the Beehive state, we get the “Beehive Burger” which is topped with honey bbq sauce, smoked bacon, cheddar cheese, and haystack onions (basically onion rings). I had to go with the local burger and also the smash fries (tossed with rosemary, olive oil, and garlic).

The burger was really good! I’d rate it above Crown Burger and probably even In-N-Out. It still doesn’t top my favorite place so far, Lucky 13 – but it’s pretty close. I’ve already since been told that I need to try the fried pickles and I also want to try the sweet potato fries and veggie frites – so we will be back soon.

For those interested, there are 3 locations right near Salt Lake, 1 in Draper, and 1 near Orem.
